Back in medical school, we learned about Addison’s disease – the result of failure of the adrenal gland and Cushing’s disease – the result of an overactive gland. Never did I hear about “adrenal fatigue”, which is actually extremely common, particlarly among high achievers.
The adrenal gland in fact, creates 40 hormones – not just cortisol and adrenalin. It works hard over our lifetimes providing the balance that we need to run our metabolism. But eventually, it wears out and suddently we are left fatigued and frustrated – not really understanding why.
If the term “Tired but Wired” rings a bell, you may want to look into this issue for yourself. I recommend the book called “Adrenal Fatigue” by Dr. James Wilson. Treatment includes REST, supplements and meditation.
It turns out that we can’t just drive ourselves into exhaustion forever… this is frequently the brick wall that doctors face in their 40’s and 50’s, and even earlier.
Adrenal fatigue is just one of the issues that I plan to teach when I start teaching anti-aging medicine. Stay tuned for 2015 classes to start.
